Mine Safety and Health Administration

Underground construction can be an inherently dangerous occupation.  This course provided by an MSHA certified Mine Rescue Instructor will cover many topics over a week long period.  You will learn what the requirements are under OSHA 1926.800 Underground Construction.  We will get into the basic principles of mine rescue, surface organization, establish rescue procedures, rescue of survivors and recovery of bodies, team member roles, when to perform barefaced exploration, advancing the fresh air base, mapping and debriefing.  The type and quantity of rescue equipment to be used will be reviewed along with what spares to keep on hand.  Extensive learning of characteristics of gases and how they react will be explained.  Basic firefighting skills will be taught as well.  Outdoor activities will be practiced to reinforce what was taught.  The actual operation and benching of the rescue breathing units will need to be coordinated with the vendor you choose for that training and should be coordinated for the first 2 days of the week.  Employees will need to be medically cleared to wear a respirator prior to the course.  As the training progresses, activities will be performed under air to simulate the difficulties of performing rescue and to assess the team’s ability based on the site conditions.  Training will be provided on-site.
